Learning Everyday...
...Loving
Every Minute! The Montessori
classroom is a learning environment. The beauty and
design of the Montessori materials capture the child’s
interest and include opportunities for individual, small
group and full group activities in the following
curriculum areas:
• Daily living
• Sensory Motor • Language • Math • Nature and science • Geography • Creative arts • Movement and music
Daily living activities give children
the skills to care for themselves and their
surroundings. But most importantly, they develop
concentration, gross and fine motor skills, eye-hand
coordination, order and independence.
Sensory Motor materials develop and refine sense
perceptions. The child develops memory and reasoning
power through the use of colors, shapes, dimension,
texture and sounds.
Nature and science materials introduce the child to the
concept of living and non-living things, to energy, to
space and time.
Geography and cultural awareness materials help children
grow in awareness of the world and other people. The
children are exposed to a variety of cultures, customs,
and celebrations.
Mathematics materials introduce number and quantity
concepts in a concrete manner. Children can construct
numbers, do simple arithmetical operations and visualize
the order of the decimal system.
Language materials increase communication skills and
help the child link everything in the world to the
sounds and symbols of the spoken and written words.
Creative art materials help the child express himself.
Children benefit from having a variety of art materials
available to them at all times that they may use
uninterrupted when they are inspired.
Movement and music. Children are born to move and to
sing. Singing gives practice in language, new words, and
poetry.
